St George
St George is the patron saint of Malta, England and many other countries, including Russia and Georgia. So what is his universal appeal that we need to celebrate him?
Most historical sources point to St George being a guard of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who was killed for refusing to make a sacrifice to the pagan gods. St George’s Day, April 23rd, is the supposed date of his martyrdom.
However, representing the triumph of good over evil, it is the myth surrounding his slaying of the dragon that is most thought of on St George’s Day.
The legend of St George’s bravery in defeating the dragon and saving the princess offered in sacrifice to it has universal appeal across the centuries. It is this association that makes St George a symbol of valour and courage.
Malta for its bravery during the Second World War was awarded the George Cross by Britain’s King George VI, and is the only nation to be honoured in this way. The medal, which is shown on the Maltese flag, depicts St George slaying the dragon
Further information on St George can be found at The Royal Society of St George.
The St George’s Day All Party Parliamentary Group was created to promote St George’s Day among Parliamentarians and as a national celebration for all. The group Chairman is Andrew Rosendell MP, Member of Parliament for Romford and Shadow Minister for Home Affairs.
